King John's Castle, County Louth

King John
Allegedly founded by King John himself though evidence points towards a previous tenant by the name of Hugh de Lacy some years prior.

The castle had two main floors over a basement which is now largely filled with masonry with the great hall sited on the first floor of the castle overlooking the harbour.

There were many different tenants over the centuries up to a point were it was used as a Hospital around about the Battle of the Boyne.

Luckily though it now serves as a National Monument but public access to the interior is forbidden due to safety concerns.
