The slope is mainly a dry habitat but due to the solution and percolation effects of the water there are points where seepage emerges as springs or flushes. There are over 100 species of plants growing along the trail. Insects and other invertebrates abound. There are a cluster of interesting features dating from around Victorian times to be found to the south west of Newton Castle. A Fulacht Fiadh or ancient cooking place is to be found on the higher ground above the trail.
